Metro Gold Cinema

The original Metro Cinema was closed in 1996 along with the nearby MidCity as both had suffered from years of neglect and poor audiences.

After a short and patchy period as a converted performance theatre, the opportunity presented itself to provide another Central City location for Art Cinema, to cope with the increasing demand by audiences, and the excess of product which film distributors were pressing the Arts Centre to show.

The new Metro Gold Class provides three theatres, each with their own unique personality and décor modelled on the grand picture palaces, all fitted with the latest cinema systems, all with luxurious armchairs, and all offering top quality films in a sophisticated relaxing environment. This has immediately become the hot location for Cinema in Christchurch.

Offering more of the 'year-round film festival' screenings which the Arts Centre Cinemas are famous for, the Metro also offers fine wines and selected ales, and freshly brewed coffee from the Lyttelton Coffee Company. If you think you have already experienced the best in Cinema in Christchurch, then you have a pleasant surprise in store at the Metro.
