Academy Cinema, The Arts CentreSince 1978, the Academy Cinema has been the leader in Arthouse Films in Christchurch. Situated in the hub of the Christchurch Arts Centre, the Academy resides in the building formerly constructed as the Gymnasium for th original Christchurch Boys High School, and is steeped in character and history. Seating 180 people this remains the prime location for artfilms, and has become synonymous with quality, independent, and intelligent cinema. As a mark of resilience, the Academy became the only cinema in the city to have survived the recession of cinema in the 1980s brought about by economic hard times and the blossoming of the video libraries. Although some were rebuilt, all of the big theatres in town – the Savoy, the Regent, the Westend, the Avon, and the Cinerama – all fell as the Academy continued to operate. Today, the Academy is the largest dedicated Arthouse cinema in the city and regular patrons now gather together regularly to enjoy quality Artfilms along with a glass of wine, or a cup of fresh espresso. |
